In AMS affiliated courses, a team teaching
approach is used in teacher education. The faculty have a
wide range of skills and keep up-to-date on the most recent
research in the fields of education, and human growth and
development. Experienced mentor teachers, instructors, and
field consultants guide the candidate through the academic
and practicum phases of the course. HMC pays all travel expenses
for supervision of practicum within 100 miles of HMC. Student
teachers or their schools pay for travel expenses over 100
miles.
Each course requires the following components to be completed
for certification by AMS:
• Attendance and participation in classes
• Practicum in a classroom
• Written assignments
• Performance assessment
• Portfolio
• Research Project
Elementary I Course Ages 6
through
9
Applicants must have at least a US Bachelor’s degree or
equivalent, submit three letters of recommendation, submit
one original transcript, have an interview with the director
or a staff member, and complete a writing sample. Credit may
be given for previous course work in another MACTE
accredited course.
Applicants who learned English as a foreign language, will
be required to take the computer-based Test of English as a
Foreign Language (TOEFL). A total score of 213 or better
will be required for acceptance. The applicant is
responsible for registering, taking and the cost of the
TOEFL .
New Legislation in Texas requires background checks and FBI
fingerprint checks for each person 14 years or older, other
than the clients of operation, who will regularly or
frequently be present at your operation while children are
in care.

The academic phase occurs in two summers and other mid-year
seminars.

Practicum phase during the school year:
• 9 months
• Minimum of 6 hours a day
• Complete at least 60% of academic phase
• Work with a mentor teacher or self-directed
• Practicum site must meet AMS and HMC standards

Affiliate, Subscriber School.
Elementary II Course Ages 9 through 12
Applicants must have completed Elementary I 6 through 9 academic work,

a survey. Credit may be given for previous course work in

with more advanced uses of the materials. Teachers completing
this course will receive a 6-12 credential.

AMS requires only one practicum for a 6
through 12 credential, which
can be in either a 6 through 9 or a 9 through 12. Under certain conditions,
students may have a self directed practicum. Schools must
be an AMS Accreditated, Affiliate, or Subscriber School unless
special arrangement are made.

-Traditional Sequence (attended 6 through9, but no internship)
-Attend combined 3rd and 4th level first summer

-Have one support visit during school year
-Attend 9 through 12 classes the summer after the 6 through 9 classes
-Two visits from field consultant during practicum in 9
through 12
